| This is a history not only of a family long associated with Amisfield and the county of Dumfries but also of the many branches which carried the name of Charteris and who played so prominent a role in the affairs of Scotland and Great Britain over so many centuries. The Charterises hail from the "Borderland" of Scotland and are most often found in the counties of that region.
The author begins with a discussion of the origin of the family and then turns to the early Lairds of Amisfield, the Three Knights of Amisfield who for so long were confused, the Last Laird of Amisfield, and then on to the cadet lines. There are chapters on Charteris of Barncleuch, Auchinstrowane, Bodsbeck, Kelwood and Duchra, and Riddingwood. In the appendices there is material on Charteris of Kinfauns, Cuthigurdie, Edinburgh and notes on the Charteris family in the capital city. Finally there is material on the architecture of Amisfield Tower. The whole is an illuminating account of the extended feudal family of Charteris and its survival over the centuries.
