Ridpath originally sought to write a history of Berwickshire, but the work soon became a more wide-ranging history of the Border country over the course of some 1500 years. The author sketches in the history of the Border area prior to 1100, but from that date through to 1603, he provides an almost day-by-day account of events in the region. So detailed is this history that it must be studied in part rather than read as a single survey. Its great value is in the detailing of events as they unfolded from a national or regional point of view rather than from a strictly local perspective.
