The Grants, who were of Norman-French origin, were one of the most influential and powerful of the feudal barons of Scotland, and as early as the reign of Alexander III they held the position of Sheriff of Inverness. Eventually a branch of the family acquired Glenmoriston, which had belonged to the Donalds before James IV transferred it to the Grants.

This, then, is a history of this family over the centuries, with an interesting selection (pp. 46-118) of lyrics, songs and elegies of Glenmoriston bards who over the centuries celebrated or lamented the major events in the life and times of this important family. The elegies provide an interesting insight into the use of Gaelic and the role of the Celtic bard over the centuries.

This book has now been scanned and put onto CD. The images can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. But please note: it is not searchable.
