Dr Charles Dickson, the author of the book 'The life of Michael Dwyer' met George Cargeeg in Dublin in 1945 and they agreed that it was the most desirable that the history of Dwyer and his descendants in Australia be researched and published. The author has carried out thorough research in Ireland and Australia, with extensive genealogical investigations of Dwyer's descendants; he himself being a great grandson of 'The Wicklow Cheif'. Michael Dwyer (1772-1825), is still regarded as a folk-hero in Ireland, especially County Wicklow, where he led a daring and charmed life that enabled him to elude capture during the time he led his intrepid mountain fighters in the Wicklow Hills. He held out until the end of 1803, when he surrendered under his own terms, and then exiled to Australia. He is entombed, with his wife Mary, in the monument to Irish Patriots in Waverley Cemetery, New South Wales. Contains genealogical records of his family and descendants and transcripts of his trial.
