The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.
The New South Wales Government Gazette of 1860 contains:
- accepted tenders for runs
- appointees to government positions
- appointments of Magistrates of the Territory
- certificates of competency issued by Pilot Board
- convicts gaining (and being deprived of) Tickets of Leave
- convicts granted Conditional Pardons including the terms of the pardon
- dissolution of business partnerships
- error in deeds
- estates of deceased persons
- impoundings
- insolvent estates
- land for sale / transfers of runs
- legally qualified medical practitioners
- licenses for auctioneers, timber, spirit merchants, brewers, and notices for publicans, confectioners, hawkers & pedlers licensing meetings
- ministers of religion registered for the celebration of marriages
- police appointments
- probate and letters of administration announcements
- ship’s deserters (stragglers)
- unclaimed letters
- and much more
A particular feature of the 1860 gazette is the number of petitions and counter petitions – for Newtown, Balmain, Ipswich, Glebe, Cudgegong, St Leonards East, Woollahra, Hunter’s Hill, Darling Point, Upper Paddington and Watson’s Bay – in some cases the names of the petitioners accompany the notice.
NEWTOWN COUNTER PETITION.
HIS Excellency the Governor General, with the advice of the Executive Council, has directed the publication of the substance and prayer of a Counter Petition to His Excellency as hereinafter set forth, presented on the 31st ultimo, and signed by seven hundred and eighteen householders and freeholders of Newtown and its vicinity-such Counter Petition being in opposition to a Petition presented for the erection of Newtown into a Municipality, and gazetted on the 12th December last.
