Government gazettes for a particular locality eventually become standardised with the type of material listed. In the 1850s you can expect the
New South Wales Government Gazettes to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes other personal information such as a salary or address:
- appointees to government positions
- appointments of Magistrates and Justices of the Peace
- court appointments
- convicts gaining Tickets of Leave
- convicts granted Conditional Pardons including the terms of the pardon
- convict runaways
- deceased estates
- dissolution of business partnerships
- insolvents
- land purchasers
- licenced auctioneers and those providing sureties
- medical practitioners recognised by coroners courts
- petitioners to the Court of Claims
- police appointments
- probate and letters of administration announcements
- spirit and brewers licencees
- successful tenderers for government business and works
- teachers and Local Boards of Inspection
- unclaimed letters
Gazettes are published by governments and their agencies as a means of communication to officials and the general public. As such they are useful, not only to monitor the actions of the government, but also as far as family historians are concerned, they are valuable primary source documents.
