Without question, this is the most important account of the history and genealogy of the House of Douglas. And the House of Douglas unquestionably was one of the most powerful noble families in all of Scottish history. In the late middle ages, no other family could match the lands and the followers of the Douglases. The leaders of that family at all times occupied a major place near the center of power in the Scottish monarchy and government. To the Stewarts, they could be a powerful ally or a major threat to the independence of the Stewart dynasty. Far more than any other family, the Douglases demanded a place at the center of Scottish political, social, and economic life. They would come dangerously close to seizing the throne itself at times, and indeed one of their family was the husband of the widowed Queen Margaret Tudor of Scotland. This was never a family which shied away from the dangers at the center, and this extended study of the family carries them through not only the mighty years of glory but also the subsequent centuries as one of the most powerful families of the past thousand years.

Originally published as a two volume book set in 1902, these are have now been reproduced as scans of the original books on CD-ROM. They can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. But please note: they are not searchable.
