This east-coast Scottish town long has been noted for its religious and educational associations, and this municipal history illustrates the extent to which the religion and education of St. Andrews shaped the town and region. St Andrews' history is followed century by century, with extended accounts of prominent leaders of the town as they intermingled with the religious and educational establishments. The Reformation and John Knox are particularly emphasized. The various colleges such as St Mary's or Madras, Archbishop Spotwood, and the role of Major Playfair in the rejuvenation of the town all receive major attention.
