The family of Knox is an ancient one in Scotland, taking its name from a Celtic word, Cnoc, which signified a small hill. For centuries, they were respected local feudal vassals, holding lands in return for military service, aids and advice. By the 16th century the extended Knox family was well established, and branches were evident throughout the Lowland and Border regions of Scotland. But it was the religious reformer John Knox, born in a suburb of Haddington in the early years of the 16th century, who would take the name of Knox from local or regional recognition to international fame.

The first portion of this study deals with families other than that of John Knox, taking them from earliest recorded times into the 19th century.

Then the second and longer portion of this history deals with the life and ancestry of John Knox and with his descendents, ncluding those in Ireland and North America. John Knox was, without question, one of the great religious figures of the 16th century and certainly one of the most important in Scottish history. Overall, this is an extended history of the Knox families of Scotland, past and present to the late 19th century, with genealogical and historical information provided where applicable.

This CD consists of scans of the whole of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
