Written by Charles Rogers, and published in 1887, this is a history of four
interrelated families: Roger, Playfair, Constable, and Haldane of Barmony -- all
of whom held estates in Perthshire.
The family of Roger came into Scotland after the Norman Conquest, settling in
Dundee, in Forfar, and finally in Perthshire, and the information on this landed
family is both genealogical and historical, and extends over many centuries into
the 19th. The Playfair family settled in Kent and later in Scotland, before
finally settling in Perthshire in particular. The Constable family took its name
from the military office of constable found in every feudal household in
Scotland. This particular family was located in Perthshire from the time of
Alexander I. The Haldanes were of Norse descent, but became prominent
landholders particularly in the Moor of Layth.
The information on these four families is extensive, and includes Scottish
and North American material. Other families mentioned include: Hunter, Lyon,
Blair, Soutar, Bisset, Gellatly, Halyburton, Ranken, Brown, Gee, Millar, Milne,
Muir, Young, and Watson.
