Written by John Malcolm Bulloch, and published 1924, he explains that the Gordons were and are a family with many cadet lines and an enormous number of family members scattered throughout Scotland. Therefore, compiling a bibliography of the books written by or about them is a daunting task indeed.
This extensive bibliography, down to 1924, includes men and women of the name of Gordon; Gordon women who have married and changed their name; women who have married Gordons; and writers of books about the Gordon family and the Gordon Highlanders.
Included as well are articles in periodicals, music, maps and portraits and printed law cases. Given the nature of the study and its complexities, it is incomplete, but even as it stands, it is an impressive attempt to record bibliographical information on the Gordons, and on such powerful men as the Huntly Gordons as well as General Gordon of imperial fame. Certainly it is a tribute to this family which for generations was identified with the old religion and with the affairs of Scotland.
