The Government Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. They were published by the government as a means of communication to officials and the general public and therefore contain information that is of great use in establishing an image of Australia and its people in the past.
A massive volume of almost 3,400 pages, the 1880 gazette includes information relating to a wide variety of topics – of interest to both genealogists and historians:
- Business partnerships – both the creation and dissolution
- Contracts accepted
- Government appointments and general notices
- Intestacies, insolvencies and wills
- Land records including leases and licenses
- Lost and stolen animals, impounding
- Magistrates appointments
- Mining companies and leases granted
- Patents and trademarks
- Trustees – including banks, church land, and cemetery sites
- Unclaimed letters
- Weekly abstracts of births and deaths
Some items of interest in the 1880 Gazette are: Names and addresses of shareholders of various mining companies, Land Tax Register and Valuation for Victoria, results of examinations for Land Surveyors, lists of Auctioneers’ Licenses issued, appointments to Boards of Advice for various school districts
