Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields throughout Australia. Compiled to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes therefore contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

They include court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments and changes in the Police Service, lists of arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and sometimes missing persons. Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often included.

Usually issued weekly, here collected together is the whole of the 1869 years worth of issues.

Some example entries taken from the 5 October 1869 issue are:
Missing Friends
Information is requested of Samuel Daniel O'Sullivan, Irish, aged 18, 5 feet 11 inches high, very fair hair, dark-blue eyes, sallow complexion, large brown mole back on right hand. Went from Cork to Brisbane, per Begapore, which sailed in March, 1863.-1st October 1869

Missing Friends
Information is requested respecting Thomas Canty, English, aged about 50, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, somewhat freckled, fair hair mixed with grey, stout build, rather stiff gait, mark of a cord drawn through the back of his neck, one finger wanting. About 4 years ago he left his family at Auckland; about 12 months afterwards he wrote from Adelaide in an incoherent style. He is reported to have been lately seen at St Kilda, but the accuracy of this account is very doubtful.-30th Setpember 1869

Deserters from H.M. Serivce
Deserted from H.M. 14th Foot, at Melbourne, on 29th September, William Heslop, and Edinburgh man, a baker, aged 29, 5 feet, 8 inches, sallow complexion, grey eyes, brown hair; wore regimentals.-1st October 1869
