Description

This family history of the house of Hanna or Hannay, originally said to be seated at Sorbie Castle, in Galloway in the southwest of Scotland. An important landed family, they supported Balliol in his struggle for the crown of Scotland, and his defeat, by Robert the Bruce places the Hannas in serious difficulties at the end of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th centuries.

They secured Sorbie in the later 15th century and held it until the 17th century. Hannas were to be found in Wigton, Ayr, Dumfries, Dunbarton, Renfrew and parts of Kirkcudbright. In the reign of King James VI a line of Hannas settled in northern Ireland and by the end of the 17th century they had moved on the North America and to Delaware.

The majority of this work is dedicated to the genealogy and history of those to went to America and settled in the Carolinas, in the mid-Atlantic states and on to the mid-West, Indiana in particular.

Because of their brief settlement in Ireland, they claimed to be Scots-Irish, but the primary interest of the author was in the American line. There are extensive genealogical accounts as well as stories of the various Hannas who settled in America.
