Originally published 1907 this is an extended genealogy and history of this branch of the Balfours, of the 16 children of James Balfour and of their descendants. Pilrig House originally belonged to the Monypenny family. The Balfours intermarried with many prominent local families, including Melville, Hampton, Elphinstone, Elliot, MacVicar, Gibson, Russell, Whytt, Mackintosh, Abercrombie, Hope, Duncan, and Munro.
There is much genealogical and historical material relating to those families in this account. Overall, this is a history of a family based around Edinburgh for over 600 years.
