Police gazettes provided information and instructions to members of the police force. You can expect the Tasmanian Police Gazettes (in the earliest years called 'Reports of Crime') to include the following information that will usually list names and sometimes personal details, descriptions with photograph, addresses and/or occupations may be an added bonus for the researcher:
- apprehensions
- disciplining of police
- escapees and absconders from custody
- housebreakers and burglars
- licensed carriers, hawkers, and tanners
- deserting wives, families, etc
- deserting from military service
- deserting from merchant vessels
- inquests
- missing friends
- murderers and their victims
- changes in the police force: resignations, promotions, demotions, deaths etc.
- inmates discharged from the invalid depots
- prisoners discharged from gaols
- property and stock recovered
- arson
- horse, cattle and sheep stealing or straying
- lost and found property
Example entries taken from the 11 January 1901 issue:
Burglary
Hobart District - On the night of 5th instant the premises of Mr. Frederick
B. Wilkinson, Chemist, No. 90, Elizabeth-street, were burglariously entered,
and a cash box containing about £7 in gold and silver stolen thereform; the
property of and, cash box only, identifiable by the above.
Inquests on Bodies [three listed, only one copied]
Kingsborough District - An inquest was held at Kettering on the 6th instant,
before J.W. Grove, Esq., Coroner, on the bodies of 'Sydney Jackson', ages 35
years, a farmer; and 'Rhoda Jackson, aged 25 years, a school-teacher.
Verdict:- "That the said Sydney and Rhoda Jackson died from the effects of
gun-shot wounds inflicted by one James Whyte, whilst he, the said James
Whyte, was temporarily insane".
The Police Gazettes are a fascinating read even if you don't have family there at the time. Reading the entries gives you a feel for the happenings and life in 1901 Tasmania.
