Issued once a week, this CD-ROM is a compilation of all of the issues of the South Australia Police
Gazette that were issued during 1873 and 1874. Each issue is usually four pages long, and
contains information such as court lists, lists of warrants issued, appointments
and changes in the Police Service, lists of
arrests and discharges (which include descriptions), escaped prisoners, and
missing persons, house-breakins, deserting wives and families, inquests, missing
friends and more ... Notices from Police Gazettes from other states are also often
included.
The Police Gazettes are an incredibly unique source of information, simply
because they were designed to be distributed amongst the Police Force only, and
the information contained often cannot be found anywhere else.
Example entry taken from the 15 April 1874 issue:
Prisoners Tried During the Month of March 1874 [these are a few extracted
from a long list]
A'Court, John F., tried at Adelaide Police Court, for larceny; sent to the
Industrial School for two years
Corrie, William alias Francis Hilton, tried at the Supreme Court, for burglary;
sentenced to two years' hard labor
Dwyer, John, tried at the Supreme Court, for arson; discharged
Fesmire, Fred. C., tried at Moonta Police Court, for embezzling the moneys of
the Moonta Institute; discharged
Horn, Charles, tried at the Supreme Court, for false pretences; sentenced to
three years' hard labor
Kennedy, Ann, tried at the Supreme Court, for perjury; discharged
Laurence, John, tried at Port Adelaide Police Court, for embezzling ship's
stores; sentenced to six weeks hard labor
McKenzie, William, tried at the Supreme Court, for a felonious assault on his
wife; discharged - ordered to the Lunatic Asylum during Her Majesty's pleasure
O'Donnell, James, tried at the Supreme Court, for rape; sentenced to eight
years' hard labor
A valuable resource for anyone with an interest in South Australian history,
even if you don't have family there.
