An absolute goldmine of information, Police Gazettes are a unique, useful and
extremely fascinating resource for local, family and social historians and
researchers in other fields throughout Australia. As they were compiled to be
distributed amongst the Police Force only, these Gazettes contain details and
information that can not be found anywhere else.
They include information on warrants issued, changes in the police force
which are all listed (promotions, demotions, resignations, dismissals,
retirements, deaths etc). Information is also given on housebreak-ins,
robberies, arson, murders, lost and found items, deserters, escaped prisoners,
missing friends, and reports on those released. Notices from interstate police
gazettes are sometimes included.
This years issues also includes Hawkers and Auctioneer licences granted, as
well as some photographs of those wanted, and those discharged.
Example entry taken from the 5 February 1921 issue:
Description of Portrait [no. 1109 - portrait of a man shown]
No. 1109.-Rockhampton - Eugen Pruess, wanted for service of a summons, charged
with deserting his illegitimate child, at Rockhampton, on the 17th August,
1920. Description:- About 21 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches high, medium
build, fair complexion and hair, blue eyes, ordinary nose, minus little finger
right hand; a native of Germany; speaks with a German accent; a miner; usually
wears a full brown suit, ox-blood coloured boots, white shirt with turned-down
coller, and a dark tie. Was last heard of when leaving Mount Mulligan, during
the month of December, 1920; then stated his intention of going South,
probably to Newcastle, to work in the mines there.-660. 1st February, 1921.
A vast resource of information on people and events in Queensland during
1921. Often something found in a Police Gazette is either totally unknown to the
researcher, as the family kept it quiet, or it can verify a family story.
The CD contains high quality scanned images of the whole years' worth of
issues. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be
