During 1895 the Queensland Police Gazette was issued once a week, and each
issue really is an historian's
goldmine of information, much of which cannot be found anywhere else. Apart from any changes
within the police force which are all listed, information is also given on
housebreak-ins, robberies, arson, murders, lost horses and cattle, deserters,
escaped prisoners, reports on those released, even licences for thing live
auctioneering, victuallers, tobacconists, and more. Notices from
interstate police gazettes are sometimes included.
Example entries taken from the 6 April 1895 issue:
Felonies and Offences not Otherwise Described
Croydon - At 4 p.m. on the 25th February last an explosion took place in the
firebox of a steam engine at James' Block, True Blue Hill, Croydon, the property
of Alfred James and others, doing damage to the amount of £100. The explosion is
supposed to have been caused by a dynamite cartridge or cartridges introduced
into the firewood used in the engine, and suspicion attaches to a man named
James Gavan, a recent employee of the True Blue Company, who used some
threatening language respecting them at the time of his discharge. The firewood
was probably intended for the engine of the Company and not for
complainant's.-O.512 1st April, 1895.
