On 10 December 1859 Queensland was proclaimed a separate colony to New South Wales. This book gives a review of the progress made during Queensland's first fifty years.
It is divided into four parts – Our Natal Year, Natal Year to Jubilee, Our Jubilee Year and The Primary Industries.
- Our Natal Year: reviews the birth of Queensland, the initiation of responsible government, the first session of parliament, and Queensland in 1860
- Natal Year to Jubilee: covers the legislature, public finance, Crown Lands legislation, appropriation of land revenue, local government and public instruction
- Our Jubilee Year: a general review of the state and examination of the federal outlook following federation just eight years earlier
- The Primary Industries: this part examines the importance of the pastoral industry, agriculture, the sugar industry and mining during the past fifty years.
FIFTY years ago an emphatic expression of confidence in the self-governing competence of the people of North-eastern Australia was given by the British Government of Lord Derby. On 6th June, 1859, Queen Victoria in Council adopted Letters Patent-which had been already approved in draft on 13th May "erecting Moreton Bay into a colony under the name of Queensland," and appointing Sir George Ferguson Bowen to be "Captain-General and Governor-in-Chief of the same."
