Generally issued weekly Government Gazettes, are a unique, useful and extremely fascinating resource
for local, family and social historians and researchers in other fields
throughout Australia. They are published by governments and their agencies as a
means of communication to officials and to the general public.
Gazettes
contain a whole range of valuable and interesting content, and in it you will
find thousands of ordinary people and localities mentioned throughout. The
information is too varied to describe in full, but some regular features are:
- acts of parliament
- government appointments, resignations and transfers, including Justices
of the Peace and returning officers
- government departments
- insolvents
- land acquisitions, rentals, sales and leases
- mining and minerals
- petitions
- ministers able to perform marriages
- details of money received and paid
by the curator of intestate estates

'supposed residence of family' lists places other than Tasmania as, Ireland,
England, Victoria, and Unknown. So this is a useful record for helping to trace
beyond your Tasmanian ancestors.]
