First published in the 1930s and reprinted in 1983, this remains one of the most complete histories and genealogies of the main branches of the great Clan Ross. After an introductory look at the clan origins, septs and dependents, and the Earls of Ross, the author moves on to a branch-by-branch study of the Ross' of: Balnagown, Pitcalnie, Kindeace, Invercastley, Calrossie, Invercharron, Braelangwall, Tolly and Achnacloich, Shandwick, Balblair, Aldie, Pitkerry and Cromarty. He also supplies chapters on well known members of the clan and on the Ross families in Canada and the United States.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.

A lot of work has gone into this although there is the possibility of mistakes here and there. Valuable and remarkable detail in relation to various branches and how they fit together, although unfortunately limited to a direct line of Lairds etc. to the exclusion of others who would also be related by descent. One may be left wondering if their family surname is Ross by it having been adopted only for the purpose of association as a Clan. No mention of branches that migrated to other countries like Australia and New Zealand. No doubt the size of the publication is also a limitation, otherwise the family tree could be enormous. Now there's a job for someone.
