The official title of this book is 'The History of Fremantle, The Front
Gate of Australia 1829-1929' by J.K. Hitchcock. Also included in the book is
a section written by J.W.B. Stephens titled 'History of the Harbour<'.
Divided into eleven chapters, the 'History of Fremantle' describes the
foundation of Fremantle and the pioneers and pilgrim fathers who explored and
founded the state of Western Australia. It also includes information on the
different eras the town experienced, including the pre-convict and the convict
period of the colony, and the beginning of the twentieth century.
This book also contains a section on the industries that affected Fremantle
during 1829-1929, eg. boat building and fruit export.
The section on the 'History of the Harbour' describes the building of
the Port, the official opening, as well as other information.
