The rest of the title describes more: "Historical Account of the Family of Frisel or Fraser, Particularly Fraser of Lovat, Embracing Various Notices, Illustrative of National Customs and Manners, with Original Correspondence of Simon, Lord Lovat".
The author of this considerable work took as his subject not only the House of Fraser but also its interaction with events of the day over the many centuries in which the Frasers were one of the greatest of all Scottish families. It begins with a discussion of the origin of the family of Fraser and its introduction to Scotland and continues with much historical and genealogical detail to the last in the direct line in 1306. Anderson then moves to a discussion of the next collateral male line and the origin of the family of Fraser of Lovat down to its conclusion with the death of the last direct male line in 1696.

Next, he discusses the appearance of Thomas Fraser of Beaufort and continues to the failure of that line. He then turns to the Frasers of Inverallochy and Brea. Finally he looks at Thomas Fraser of Knockie and Strichen and proceeds through Thomas Alexander Fraser of Lovat and Strichen. The amount of detail included in this study is impressive and undoubtedly is useful to the historian and genealogist studying this important family of Fraser in Scotland.
