considering settling in the Australian colonies a realistic and practical view
of what the colonies were like, in particular, the colonies of New South Wales,
Western Australia and Van Diemans Land.
“...judging from actual observation of the capabilities of the Colonies,
that most of the works hitherto published are calculated to excite in the
emigrant expectations...it is with this conviction that I have been induced to
offer to the public the substance of my note-book, trusting that it will be
found to convey an impartial and correct, though brief and unvarnished
account, of the actual state of things in this portion of globe...”
