The first report, done by Alexander Hay in 1577, discusses each of the great noble houses in turn, describing their wealth, their religion, their loyalty to the king (or to Queen Elizabeth of England), and overall their general disposition within the political structure. Subsequent lists provide valuable information on the fate of the family, its influence in Scotland, and the way in which it was viewed by English ministers.
This is a valuable reference tool to help understand the ebb and flow of family fortunes in Scotland during a time of great upheaval in British politics.
