1888 was the first year that the 'Queensland Post Office Directory and
Country Guide' was produced by Hollander, Wright & Co., and they did a
magnificent job. The book is actually Titled Queensland, but it is primarily
about Brisbane and suburbs, which is why we've titled it 'Brisbane'.
This directory totals over 1000 pages, and includes all the regular features
of a directory. The full title of the publication explains just what it
includes: "The Queensland Post Office Directory with which is incorporated
the Post Office Directory of Brisbane and country guide, containing street,
alphabetical, trade and professional directory of Brisbane and suburbs, and
business, official and professional residents in all the principal towns in the
colony. A miscellaneous directory of useful information."
Includes nineteen directories all in the one:
- Street directory
- Alphabetical directory
- Justices of the Peace
- Trades directory
- Country directory
- Government and Official directory
- Legal directory
- Medical directory
- Ecclesiastical directory
- Masonic directory
- Institutions directory
- Telephone directory
- Surveyors and Architects directory
- Stations directory
- Post and Telegraph directory
- Railway directory
- Ports and Harbours directory
- Miscellaneous directory
- Municipal directory
- Advertisements
You will find details of the local tradesmen, solicitors, doctors, ministers
of religion, architects and hundreds more occupations. You can see who had the
telephone connected - together with their phone number. Find out where the local
post office is, together with the rate of postage for the time. This is just a
small sampling of the valuable information that a directory can give you, let alone over 100 pages of advertisements, which are fascinating reading in themself.
Useful for and historian with an interest in the region, but particularly
useful for local and social historians and genealogists.
This CD contains high quality scanned images of the whole of the
