In his book, William Robertson provides a more modern history of Ayrshire, beginning with the Celts and continuing through Celtic and Roman Christianity, the incredible influence of monasteries, the Viking era, and the battle of Largs. He then continues with an account of William Wallace and the story of his resistance to the English, the trials and tribulations of Robert the Bruce, the story of his children and their reign over Scotland, down into the Reformation and the 18th and 19th centuries. Volume 2 of this work is the more unique and informative portion of this history, for it contains extended genealogical and historical accounts of the great titled families with estates in Ayrshire. Included are separate and distinct chapters on: Kennedy, Montgomery, Boyle, Bentinck, Stuart, Loudoun and Campbell, Dalrymple, Cunningham, Boyd, Cochrane, Hamilton, and Fergusson.
