Published in 1888 in two volumes which total over 1000 pages, these are extremely rare books. The Aldine History of Queensland, is a comprehensive and beautifully illustrated record of Queensland's past.
Written by W. Frederic Morrison as a 'celebration of the centennial year of the settlement of Australia' it includes chapters on Australian and Queensland history from the exploration of Australia through to the different districts of the colony of Queensland in 1888. It contains information on the different governors, the national constitution, interior exploration, resources, religious work, education, recreation, and a large biographical section. It also includes over 500 illustrations of people and places along with several maps.
The really fascinating part of this set of books (apart from the gorgeous illustrations throughout), is the large Appendix section which consists of over 320 pages of biographies and photographs of Queensland's noted people. The biographies have been grouped by towns. So persons who lived in (or had connections to) that particuar town are listed. You will find information such as name, year born, place born, often when they emigrated, and usually their working life, which can include interesting tidbits such as a baker 'who has put together a very substantial trade, and bakes an average 500 to 700 loaves a day'. Also included is a note on family members (ie. he is married, and is the father of two sons and two daughters).
There are at least 3 variant issues of The Aldine History of Queensland, the Iron Works issue, the Courier Buildings issue and the McIlwraith issue. The text appears to be the same in all issues but contain some differing plates. The "Ironworks" issue is what has been scanned for this CD. We have added the distinctive plates from the "Courier" issue. We have not yet located a "Mcllwraith" issue, but would welcome advice of one that may be available to scan – to include its distinctive plates in an updated edition of this CD.
Originally produced by Archive CD Books Australia in 2006, this title has now been remastered and re-released, and includes better searching capability. This CD contains high quality scanned images of the whole of the original volumes, and has been bookmarked for easy navigation. Pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
