This CD-ROM set of the Wiltshire 1841 Census comes on 13 CDs, digitised images of the original census enumerators' books taken from microfilm (not microfiche) as this is the best possible quality. Please note: Censuses are organised by Registration Districts, which DO NOT necessarily correspond with county boundaries. A set of census records for a Registration District may omit some places within a county, and/or include places from adjacent counties.

The publishers are very proud of the superb quality of the scanned images. They've have worked from really excellent films copied from the first generation films at the PRO, and have then used the very best possible film scanner currently available to digitise the images at a high resolution.

This is an enormous resource, containing a great deal of information for those who are prepared to spend the time getting acquainted with census data. The original forms are presented as clear images and are organised into particular towns and villages. While the completed returns are handwritten, they are highly legible and easy to read. The beauty of having a census for an entire county presents the opportunity to search for names in neighbouring settlements,. providing a host of potential new leads for your particular historical or genealogical quest. A must for the serious researcher, the returns contain information on family members, ages, occupations, marital status and also work very well when used in conjunction with other types of records. I'm centred on Wiltshire at the moment but plan to acquire similar records from other counties in the future. A truly valuable resource - I would almost call census data a bedrock item for any family history venture.
