Written by Robert Locke Bremner in 1923, this 304 page work is particularly recommended for its chronological approach to the interaction of the Norsemen and Scotland. Beginning in late Roman times, it traces, in narrative fashion and in considerable detail, the Norse/Viking invasions of the north, their settlements, and their contribution overall to Highland life and culture. Bremner's study concludes with the Battle of Largs in AD 1263.

There is material here on the state of Alban and the state of Erin at the beginning of the Norse period, the Kingdom of Dublin, the Earldom of Orkney, the Norwegian overlords, the Battle of Brunanburh, the Norse in Kintyre, and Somerled. Bremner made extensive use of the sagas, and there are separate chapters on five of the most important for the study of the Vikings in Scotland.
