London's Newgate Gaol is probably best know today from the novels of Charles Dickens, however, there is much more to it than nineteenth century notoriety.

As the place where prisoners, male and female, awaited trial, execution or transportation it was England's most feared gaol for over 700 years. Among its most famous prisoners were the author of spy Daniel Defoe, the playwright Ben Johnson and the pirate Captain Kidd. In the eighteenth century the thief Jack Sheppard became the talk of the town for his daring escapes.

This book takes you from its twelfth century origins to its final closure in the early twentieth century. It charts the major events in Newgate's history and life within its walls to reveal the gaol's key role in the development of the English penal system.

Reading this book will let you relive the conditions inside Britain's most notorious gaol, you'll discover the most feared punishments of all, and you'll understand how burning down Newgate brought Britain to the brink of Revolution.

A well researched text covering the history of Newgate prison right up to it’s closure. Clearly laid out with descriptions of daily life and punishments throughout the centuries. Whilst reading the book I had the chance to visit Madame Tassauds wax works in Surfer’s Paradise and do the dungeon tour which bought to life the punishments described in the book. Madame Tassauds in London purchased artifacts from Newgate over the years up until its closure.
