The Foreword starts as follows: 'Most maritime writers appear to have glossed over the visits made by the splendid clipper 'Lightning' to Geelong in the years 1862-69, probably with good cause. Much of the early glamour surrounding her had disappeared by this time and little publicity was given to her visits until her dramatic destruction by fire in 1869'.
The author has compiled some research on this American built British clipper, and hopes that it will of interest not only to Geelong shiplovers, but others with either a connection to the area or those who worked on the ship.
