The Battle Abbey Roll contains the names of some 629 men who fought alongside Duke William of Normandy in 1066 in his successful conquest of England. The list was ordered by the victorious William to be compiled as a memorial to his victory and a record of those companions in arms who had fought in his cause. Even at the time of its compilation, the identity of some of those could not be clarified. The monks of a Sussex abbey were charged to compile the roll and were to keep it and read it out on special days. This annotation of that list was the first researched edition, drawing upon geographical, genealogical, and historical material in England and France to identify those listed in it. It provides extensive information on these companions of Duke William and clarifies the claims of those who had asserted that they "came with the Conqueror." Many of these families resettled in Scotland.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
