New South Wales shipwrecks are one of the most fascinating, if little known, aspects of the State's history. From the smallest sloops and cutters of the 19th century to large international cargo carriers in the 20th century, shipping of all shapes and sizes is represented in the shipwreck record of this coast.

Information about many of these vessels is still very scarce. Documentary records are often missing or were never kept. This is particularly so for Australian built wooden vessels of the 1800s. These were the workhorses that transported people, produce and other materials between Australian coastal ports, or into the South Pacific region. In many instances the only record lies on the sea floor. Through careful research and archaeological investigation, these sites can contribute valuable information about earlier maritime history.

Accompanying the destruction of vessels and their cargoes, are the numerous tales of hardship, tragedy, heroism and even humour.
