So you've heard of Police Gazettes ... but do you "really" know what they are? In short the Police Gazettes were weekly news reports that were distributed amongst the Police Force only. As such they contain details and information that can not be found anywhere else.

Far from listing any changes within in 'Force' (promotions, transfers, resignations, deaths etc), you will find information on courts lists, inquest verdicts, lists of those arrested, escaped prisoners and missing persons, and listings of stolen items (as well as from whom), licences issued for various occupations, deserters from family, deserters from service, warrants issued, prohibited immigrants and so much more ...

Police Gazettes are an underused source, partly because of their availability (you would usually only find them in select archives offices or libraries), and partly because people don't know about them. Now that Archive Digital Books Australasia has released them on CD-ROM, everyone has access to this amazing resource. This CD-ROM contains all issues that were released in Queensland for the year 1926.

SAMPLE ENTRY (from the 2nd January 1926 issue):

Safe-blowing
Roma Street, Brisbane - At about 2.50 p.m., on the 26th December, 1925, an explosion was heard in Victor Jensen's boot shop, Queen street, Brisbane. Subsequent examination showed that an attempt had been made to blow open a safe by means of explosives, and gelignite fuses, and a detonator had been inserted in the keyhole of another safe. The sum of 15s. 9d. was stolen from a small drawer in the cashier's desk. Entrance to the premises was gained by prising open the back door; the pane of glass above the door was also broken, and it is assumed that the person who entered the premises broke the glass with his hand, as spots of blood were spattered about the premises, particularly at the back door. A man, who is no doubt identical with Harry Terry, alias Johnston, convicted criminal (vide "Queensland Police Gazette" 1922, page 708, photograph No. 152), was seen leaving the laneway at the rear of Jensen's shop immediately after the explosion was heard. Description:- About 30 years of age, 5 feet 7 1/2 inches high, medium build, darkish complexion, dark-brown hair, brown eyes, about 9 stone 3 lb. weight, scar on right side of forehead, first joint of first finger of right hand deformed, small birthing mark inside of right bicep, scar inside of left bicep, inside left wrist, on right breast, and outside of left shin, small toe or right foot overlapping; a native of New South Wales; rather shabbily dressed, wore a felt hat.

A vast resource of information on people and events that during 1926 (as well as some that were earlier). Often something found in a Police Gazette is either totally unknown to the researcher, as the family kept it quiet, or it can verify a family story.
