FROM THE PREFACE
One day in 1985 a certain local identity happened to be telling a story handed down to him by his great grand-father - one of the earliest white settlers in Nairne. It occurred to us then that these stories should be recorded and shared.
Thus began the Nairne Primary School Local History Project with its two main functions. Firstly to create a 'history corner' in the school library to store the newspaper clippings, photographs, carefully handwritten reminiscences, and tapes and videos. And secondly, to introduce a 'history of Nairne' theme to the school curriculum. Guiding this process were the Nairne History Project Committee members Julie Dubrich, Stephen Taylor, Vai O'Callaghan, Chris Ainsworth, Chris Tilley and Chris Budd.
Residents welcomed children into their homes, and came up to the school and shared their memories with the children. George Chapman Pty Ltd and Mt Barker State Bank generously contributed towards costs. Teachers planned programmes to incorporate the history theme, and the children responded with enthusiasm and lots of imaginative sketches, poems and articles which form the basis of this book. Because we wanted to emphasise the involvement of all the children, individual contributions have not been named. We felt it important for all the children to 'own' the book and their names are acknowledged in the class groups. Thankyou to everyone who contributed.
This book, our contribution to South Australia's Jubilee 150 year is a collection of the work done by the children and community of Nairne, and we hope that it reflects the same warmth that is evident among the people of this lovely town.
