This publication (now on CD) contains selections from "Those that will not work", which is the fourth volume of "London Labour and the London Poor" by Henry Mayhew.
It gives readers a view of the misery, vice, crime, want and ignorance of the lives of the underclass that haunted London's streets in the mid 19th century. This view allows the historian to understand the reasons behind the transportation of individuals for seemingly minor crimes such as a theft of a handkerchief. It also allows the researcher to understand the why it is often thought prostitutes appeared as dressmakers etc. in census returns.
A very useful family and local history resource for nineteenth century London, as it gives valuable insight into the life and times of the 19th century,
