The benefit of this book is the insight into the history and background of the colony of Western Australia and its current organisation by government and other bodies such as the churches. It does not provide the reader with lists of names but does occasionally mention a person in the narrative.

In gaining a snap shot of Western Australia and thus providing valuable background information for researchers, this book is important with coverage as follows:

- Progress of the colony: —financial, industrial, and material
- Colonial organisatin: —governance, schools, law and order, military, churches and land ownership
- Commerce: —jarrah timber industry, exports, horses for India, guano, mining
- Assisted immigration (p100)

WESTERN Australia has not, like the other Australian Colonies and New Zealand, had any rapid increase of population, either from immigration, under associations having large capital at command, or induced by the discovery of gold fields. The progress has therefore been slow, but it has also been regular; the only stimulus it has received has been from the introduction of convicts in 1850 ; in other respects it has been dependent on the industry of its small population.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original book. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.
