After more than 95 years, the story of the 'Fighting Nineteenth' can can finally be told. Almost 5000 men served in the 19th Battalion, AIF during its three and half years as one of the four battalions of the 5th Brigade, 2nd Division. It was formed in Sydney in March 1915 and many of its first recruits were recently discharged members of the Australian force that captured the Germs colonies in New Guinea.

This history traces the battalion's progress from Australia to Egypt for training and then its four month on Gallipoli where it was responsible for the defence of Pope's Hill. After the evacuation, it returned to Egypt to defend to Suez Canal.

The battalion then moved to the Western Front in early 1916 where it participated in all the major campaigns involving Australians in France and Flanders.

During the next two years. it suffered heavy casualties, especially a tthe battles of Fleurs and Second Bullecourt, being reduced to almost ineffective fighting strength. In addition to the manuy combat casualties, the unit suffered through two cruel northern EUropean winters and the endless drudgery of trench warfare routines and gruelling fatigue duties. Lieutenant Percy Storkey, originallyfrom New Zealand, who won the Victoria Cross at Hangard Wood in April 1918 was only one of many men decorated for their bravery.

Using official war diaries and input from individual diaries, letters and photos provided by families, the authors have shown how men served and endured terrible situations but fought on. The detail of life for the men who wore the brown and green diamond is presented without fear or favour - this is how they lived, played, fought, survived or died. The book contains a Nominal Roll, Honours and Awards and CD which contains details biographical information.
