Please note: Censuses are organised by Registration Districts, which do not necessarily correspond with county boundaries. A set of census records for a Registration District may omit some places within a county, and/or include places from adjacent counties. The CDs contain the records of Registration Districts.
The publishers are very proud of the superb quality of the scanned images. They've have worked from really excellent films copied from the first generation films at the PRO, and have then used the very best possible film scanner currently available to digitise the images at a high resolution.
But with the census set there's a bonus.... don't expect this on all of the census sets! On the CDs is a completeName Indexfor the whole of the Cornwall 1861 census:
So it will be 'really' easy to find people.
And if that's not enough, there is also a 'detailed'Place Index. The place index is sorted by abode (living at) and then by parish. This makes it easier to find the obscure places within the county, and where known, an exact address.
You may look for:
1. Any single place by word(s), e.g. Chapel, or Chapel Street, or Illogan
2. A multiple of words, e.g. Chapel Street Illogan (a multiple word search is for consecutive words on one line of the index document, i.e. address plus parish)
Add to that the complete name index.... and scans of all of the pages of the original census enumerators' books..... and we have the 'perfect' research tool.
Furthermore, the indexes themselves are in a searchable format, so it is possible to search for a part of a surname (handy for surname variations), and those really elusive 'surnames' used as second Christian names that help in tracing the mother's maiden name or family from her children's names.
No additional software is required for the indexes.
This 'bonus index' has been made possible with the Cornwall 1861 census because the publishers were able to work in partnership on this one with the Cornwall Family History Society, who provided their index to me in database format. I am really excited about this, because it just shows what can be done with a little co-operation!
