From the late 1830s to the early 1850s, shiploads of Prussian Lutherans came to Australia (mostly SA) and established villages in Klemzig, the Adelaide Hills, the Barossa and beyond. Many thousands of descendants are now scattered throughout Australia. This book is based on a 1931 work by W. Iwan, largely translated from the German here for the first time, which tells the story of this emigration. Included are lists of theC emigrants (about 1,400 names, with place of origin, ages, and occupations) from Prussian archival sources (many now lost). Iwan's material is here updated and supplemented, and comprehensive indexes are added.

  • Because of their beliefs

I am enjoying learning about the heritage of the Prussian people. I am looking for the Prussian Knoblock families that emigrated to Victoria rather than South Australia but the history of their nation helps to understand them better. We knew they were Free Evangelical Lutherans and moved from Melbourne areas up country. Ours to Inglewood and Castlemaine.

I must admit I have only skimmed over the book as yet. But with just that brief look I know I will gain a much better insight into our family ancestors from Prussia. Just need time for the indepth study and I will have so much more knowledge on the history behind the venture to Australia. this book was an absolute treasure trove of information. Not knowing anything of the Prussian history when ancestors came over(my sister in laws) I took a punt on this book in the hope as any researcher will tell you. and low and behold a mine of treasures unfolded. giving some insights into the history at the time and reasons behind the emigration to Australia and also has good information on the three branches that ended up here and telling which towns they came from. Highly recommended for Prussian immigrants.
