When Great Britain declared war on Germany in August 1914, the recently federated and self-governing Commonwealth of Australia responded enthusiastically on behalf of the Mother Country. This support for Great Britain reflected strong ties of kinship and affection as well as obligation - a profound sense of cultural and political affinity, even unity.

Yet, there was also an emergent Australian nationalism, apparent before federation and gathering pace thereafter, which asserted values that were subtly different: a greater egalitarianism and a celebration of Australia's distrinctive landscape, flora and fauna. This was a partial view, of course - it glossed over the impact of the urban areas and ignored Aboriginal Australians. Nevertheless, this was a nationalist imagining to which many in Australia subscribed.

'Australia in the Great War' is a timely, comprehensive account of Australia during the First World War. Drawing on many contemporary sources, including personal accounts by soldiers and their families, distinguished historian Philip Payton explores the experiences of ordinary Australians during the global conflict of 1914-1918 and shows how these helped to forge a new and unique national identity.

Illustrated with maps and original photographs, 'Australia in the Great War' is an important contribution towards the greater understanding of Australian history and the sacrifices made by Australians, both home and overseas, during the First World War.
