This book details the role of animals in warfare. We know about dogs, horses and camels, but what about mice, porpoises, elephants, yaks and reindeer?
The author originally set out to chronicle the life and death of the animals in Australian service, but as he researched the records, he discovered the unusual nature of some animals that were used. He widened his focus to write a book that covers many wars over the centuries and a strange assortment of animals, birds and other creatures that men men to fight them.
The scope flows from Simpson and his donkey, to the charge at Beersheba. From a rooster guarding his battalion during the First World War, to porpoises used in the Gulf War and many other battles and campaigns.
