This massive four-volume history of Ulster provides a detailed history of the long and complicated evolution of affairs in the northern counties of Ireland, particularly from the perspective of the English-speaking world.

By 1920, Great Britain faced a strong demand for an independent Ireland from the south, and in fact a civil war already existed, spurred on by the events of Easter Sunday, 1916. The northern counties contained a large Protestant population which sought to remain associated with Great Britain, and there as well growing conflict between the Catholic minority and the Protestant majority would continue throughout the century. The demand for a detailed history of the northern, industrial region resulted in this 4-volume study which begins with the Celtic background of the region and its geographical and historical associations with a Scotland which was only a few short miles away across the narrow straits.

The first volume includes the early Scottish and English incursions into the north, concluding with the reigns of Queen Elizabeth I of England and King James VI of Scotland. Volumes 2 and 3 concentrate upon a mere 100 years, but it was a century in which the Plantation of Ulster changed the entire nature of the region forever. The civil wars of King Charles I and Oliver Cromwell, the restoration of King Charles II in 1660, and finally the exile of King James VII conclude Volume 3. The final volume provides information on the wars of King William III and King James VII in Ireland, the siege of Derry, and the final settlement of the area by 1700. The history of the region over the next two centuries concludes the work. This is an invaluable reference tool for anyone studying the history (or genealogy) of the region.
