Compiled over a number of years, the 'Pastoral Pioneers of South Australia' is a compilation of articles that was first produced by 'The Adelaide Stock and Station Journal', as as series of biographical sketches starting in 1923.

This two volume set contains approximately 300 biographies of South Australia's Pastoral Pioneers and Old Colonists. The Foreword claims that '... this is the most comprehensive collection of biographies ever produced in relation to the pastoral industry of any state'.

A photograph accompanies each entry, as well as extensive biographical details. Those falling into the 'Old Colonists' category had arrived in the state prior December 28, 1846 (which was the 10th Anniversary of the Province). A large percentage of the entries in these volumes contain previously unpublished information (other that the Stock Journal), including information that has been supplied by descendants and old friends of those listed, which includes details and stories that would have otherwise gone unknown.

Full of history and biographies this is a valuable record of the early pioneers and pastoralists who helped make South Australia what it is today.

High quality scanned images of the whole of the original books. This CD has been bookmarked for easy navigation, and pages can be searched, browsed, enlarged and printed out if required.

Written at a time when some of this was fairly recent history, so very useful from that perspective and also the context of the views of that era.

Good value for the information contained in these two volumes. Issue with billing was quickly resolved.

  • A Collection of early Pioneers

A collection of early pastoral pioneers collected by the Stock and Station Journal which was a popular paper for country pastoral people. It has biographies of descendants of the early colonists, ie people who arrived in South Australia proir to 1846 and then those who were classed as early colonists ie arrived in the following 10 years up to 1856. Many of the biographries are an extension of earlier ones in other collections of biographies. Like any biographical information time has had a big influence. They are well worth reading even if there is no real relationship to the person involved to the reader. the biographies draw a picture of the good times and not so good which would have affected all who were living in the colony which had become a state of Australia.

The various discs which i have bought together give a development and progress of the colony of South Australia from settlement to the mid 20th century. The background of all the discs are a detailed history of South Australia and the people who helped to make it what it became by 1927, the time of the Pastoral Pioneers.

I have been able to find various little pieces to help pad out my family history research of my many South Australian families. They have been a worth while investment.
