The late Meta Scarlett "belonged, as she wrote, "to Badenoch," that long valley in the heart of the Highlands. It lies in the south-east division of Inverness-shire, and, as Ms. Scarlett notes, the inhabitants are the Cat People -- Mackintoshes, Shaws, MacBeans, Macphersons, Ritchies, MacGillivrays, Dallases, Clarks, Cattanachs and Murdochs.
