Originally published in 1882, this book examines the history of Queensland from 1770 to the separation of the Moreton Bay District from New South Wales and its constitution as a separate colony in December 1859.

The author considers Queensland’s history in twelve timespans:

  • 1770-1824: Voyages by Cook, Flinders and Oxley
  • 1824-1839: The period of penal establishments, voyages of discovery by Cunningham and Logan, the establishment of the Moravian Mission to the Aborigines by Dr Lang, a visit by Backhouse and Walker and finally the withdrawal of the prisoners and preparation for a free settlement
  • 1839-1843: a look at Brisbane at the termination of the convict era
  • 1843-1846: passage of the Preferable Liens Act, invention of the boiling down process and Leichhardt’s exploratory expedition to Port Essington
  • 1846-1849: proposal of a new colony for reformed convicts at Port Curtis, exploratory expeditions by Mitchell, Kennedy and Leichhardt, establishment of the Courts of Petty Sessions
  • 1848-1850: proposed constitution for New South Wales, Dr Lang and his emigration plans, the arrival of the “Fortitude”, “Chasely” and “Lima”, last exploration and death of Kennedy
  • 1850-1851: the arrival of more convicts, establishment of Circuit Courts, cotton cultivation, improvement of the port of Brisbane, census of 1851
  • 1852: efforts at gold discovery, the separation and transportation questions, Hely’s expedition in search of Leichhardt, social progress, Moreton Bay Steam Navigation Company
  • 1853-1854: contemptuous treatment of the district in the New South Wales Legislative Council, immigration, Rev WB Clarke’s geological tour, public land sales, murder of Mr Strange
  • 1855: appointment of Sir William Denison, opposition to separation in New South Wales, Crimean Patriotic Fund, bridge over the Brisbane, Brisbane Botanic Gardens, start of AC Gregory’s first expedition
  • 1856: the Separation Movement, attempt in New South Wales to retain the Clarence and Richmond River districts, Mr E Deas Thompson’s recantation
  • 1857-1859: Rockhampton proclaimed a township, AC Gregory’s search for Leichhardt, Dalrymple’s examination of the Burdekin country, Order in Council creating the new colony of Queensland, preparation for reception of new Governor

Though the author's intention had been to publish a second volume covering to the close of 1881 this never eventuated - only the first volume was ever published.
