Caithness is a martime county in the extreme northeast of mainland Scotland, and while it long was inhabited by Celts of the Curnavii tribe, Caithness was from the 10th century settled by Scandinavians and by Norwegians in particular who altered the population base and the culture of the province.

This, then, is the history of some of the families who settled there then or who came into the region at a later date. Included are: Brodie; Bruce of Ham, Hastigrow and Seater, Lyth, and Stanstill; Budge of Toftingall; the Earls of Caithness; Calder of Achingale, Newton, Lynegar and Strath; Campbell; Coghill of that Ilk; Cunningham; Davidson; Doull of Thuster; Dunbar of Hempriggs, Northfield and Bowermadden; Gibson; Gordon; Gunn; Henderson; Innes of Sandside and Thursater; Kennedy of Stroma; Manson; Mowat; Murray; Nicolson; Oswald; Taylor of Thura; Traill; Williamson; and Sutherland.

The family, however, which is most prominently discussed is that of Sinclair and St Clair, and there are sections on a long list of Sinclair branches or local families. The histories are both genealogical and historical and include many families not often featured in standard histories of the region.

This CD consists of scans of the original book, which can be browsed, enlarged and printed if required. Please note: it is not searchable.
