The history of South Australian coastal shipping commenced the day that settlement began, and the story of the shipping that served Yorke Peninsula really commenced the day the first landowner wanted to look at the property he had purchased.
From the earliest times, the mainstay of the shipping services were the little sailing craft variously named ketches, barged, schooners, or cutters. These small vessels, frequently with a crew of only one man, brought to the settler the barest of necessities and took back to Port Adelaide the laboriously obtained produce, salt and firewood.
